Minors and Certificates
Students can individualize their degrees by pursuing minors or certificates in a different discipline. Minor offerings can shift according to the faculty we have on campus.
Minors at CMU-Q
While every CMU-Q student will have a major area of study, many also choose to pursue a minor area of study too. For some students, they find they are very interested in a second subject and they would like to learn more about it. For others, a minor is a subject that complements their major area of study.

The minor in Arabic studies promotes language proficiency, as well as a deeper understanding of Arabic culture.
Business Administration
Business Administration
The minor in business administration is for students in other majors who wish to explore the functional areas of business administration.
Computer Science
Computer Science
Students minoring in computer science will obtain a basic level of understanding of the fundamentals of the discipline. The minor enables students to explore sub-areas of interest within computer science, based on their interests. Students completing the minor will be able to use, design, develop, identify and analyze different algorithms and data structures to solve problems. Students will also be able to reason about and implement these algorithms using different programming languages and paradigms that best suit the desired application domain.

This minor is designed for students who are interested in gaining an in-depth understanding of financial markets. This minor mirrors the finance concentration in the business administration program and would be beneficial to students who are interested in pursuing a career in the financial sector or management consulting. Students will learn about core concepts in finance, such as time value, bond and equity valuations, project evaluation with the underlying goal of making more informed business decisions. They will also gain exposure to financial modeling tools designed to help value companies in order to make investment decisions.

The minor in mathematical sciences gives students a firm foundation in a core set of fundamental mathematical topics, including real analysis, discrete mathematics, and linear algebra, while engaging students in a breadth of mathematical topic areas through electives.

The neuroscience minor curriculum allows students from various disciplines to gain fundamental knowledge of neuroscience concepts. Students pursuing the minor will learn the basic biological foundations of the nervous system, understand the effects of basic neurological function on behavior, and gain an appreciation of the interdisciplinary nature of the field of neuroscience.

The professional writing minor prepares students for careers as writers and communication specialists in a range of fields, including publishing, government, law, journalism, health care, community advocacy, the non-profit sector, education, corporate communications, finance, and the arts.

The sociology minor introduces the student to central concepts in sociological theory and methods of empirical inquiry needed to broadly understand social behavior, including its structure, history, and dynamics. Students choose among a range of methodological approaches and substantive topic areas including social psychology, work and organizations, social networks, technology and society, medical sociology, and gender and family. Exposure to these topics will help students understand and appreciate the processes by which families, groups, and organizations form and evolve over time; by which individuals affect and are affected by the society in which they live; and by which technology and institutions shape and influence society.

The tech entrepreneurship minor provides students with an in-depth, interdisciplinary understanding in the field of entrepreneurship with a focus on the use of digital technologies. Students develop critical thinking with respect to new ways of creating ventures and online businesses, and learn the interplay between business, technology and society through the lens of entrepreneurship.

The history minor prepares students for their future by giving them a profound appreciation of the lessons of the past. In addition, the history minor prepares students to understand current problems within their historical context, improves student writing and argumentative skills, and trains students to be critical readers of source materials.

Media and Politics
The media and politics minor is a joint program between Northwestern University in Qatar and Georgetown University in Qatar. The minor introduces students to the role of mass communication in political, diplomatic, and policy-making processes, as well as the role of politics in the shaping of mass media products and policies.

Product Management
This minor is designed for STEM students who are interested in careers that combine skills from computing, human computer interactions (HCI), and business. This is an interdisciplinary minor that offers a mix of business strategy, marketing, technology, and design skills that are sought-after in product positions in industry. The minor offers students the opportunity to take some strategy courses, economics and marketing. Students will have to take HCI courses that are currently not offered in Qatar. Therefore, in order to complete this minor, students will have to take a few courses in Pittsburgh.

Students pursuing the minor in psychology will acquire foundational knowledge about psychological theories, understand the application of the scientific method to the study of human behavior, learn to critically assess the connections between research results, hypotheses, and theories, and gain expertise in active research areas.

CMU-Q created its first AI certificate program in 2023 to provide specialized knowledge and skills using artificial intelligence within specific contexts. Certificates are open to students in all majors, and offer a targeted and practical focus. CMU-Q intends to expand the AI certificate offerings to meet the demands of specific industries.
AI+Finance
The AI Finance certificate provides students with valuable skills to apply AI techniques to analyze financial data, develop investment strategies, and manage risk. Students who complete this certificate are well-prepared to pursue careers in the financial industry, including roles such as financial analytics, data analyst, or risk management specialist.
