CMU-Q Winter Institute introduces 18 students to computer science

The second annual Winter Institute: Discovering Computer Science wrapped up last week, with 18 Qatari students attending the week-long workshop.

The Winter Institute is an outreach program to introduce Qatari high school students to studying and working in the field of computer science. The students were hand-picked by Carnegie Mellon Qatar after demonstrating an interest and potential to excel in computer science.

The week closed with a reception for students and parents. Andrew Moore, dean of Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science, spoke to the students about the impact computer scientists are having.

“This is the discipline which is changing the world,” said Moore, “and CMU has a history of groups getting together to do big things.”
