International Night celebrates diversity, collaboration

More than five hundred students, faculty members, staff members and their families from across Education City came together to celebrate International Night. The event on the EC Green Spine was a collaboration between Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar and Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, and featured international cuisine, cultural activities, a fashion show and musical and dance performances.

International Night is a longstanding tradition where the CMU-Q community celebrates its diversity, and one of the most popular events of the academic year. This year’s event was organized by CMU-Q students Cyrine Darweesh and Reem Elasad, who teamed up with the Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar student government. The event included 14 booths that showcased the culture and heritage of different countries.

Elasad outlined a crucial way that this year’s event was different: “We wanted to include cultures that are not typically showcased, so we worked on connecting students across campuses to work together and embrace their cultures.”

The performances also included cultures that have not been typically represented at International Night, including Latin American, Vietnamese, and Sudanese.
