Structural and Electronic Properties of Quantum Magnets

Materials with correlated electronic properties may lead to completely novel technologies. As the 20th century computer technology was based on semiconductors that can be tuned between an insulating and a conducting phase, quantum magnets and strongly correlated electron materials offer a full palette of phases to explore. The long-term vision is that controlling transitions between those phases will nurture new technological materials for the 21st century. In this perspective, we propose to study phase transitions in quantum magnets in order to strengthen the basic understanding of this emerging field. The project will position CMU-Q and Qatar in the worldwide ongoing research efforts on those materials.
