    Experience CMU-Q This event gives prospective students the opportunity to learn more about the Biological Sciences Program offered here at CMU-Q. Prospective students also get the opporunity to experience experiments that use state of the art equipment. They also get to collaborate as scientists and present their work as part of a team presentation. As part of my service to the Biological Sciences Program, I took part in this event, helping support student throughout the lab work and team presentations, provided an insight to life here at CMU-Q, and fielded questions about courses, concerns and extracurricular options. I was also involved with providing feedback on the delivery of this day and an evaluation of what we will do differently in the the following Experience CMU-Q day.

    Provided assistance to possible matriculating students in learning about blood types as a tool in criminology and transfusion medicine at the Biotechnology Explorer Program at Carnegie Mellon Qatar.

    Sustainable Development Goals. As part of the EcoCampus intitiative and also identifying SDGs within my research/syllabi, I attended a workshop by Alexander Hiniker. This is with a view of helping construct a susatainability audit for the EcoCampus Committee

    The Biotechnology Explorer Program is an outreach program geared towards student matriculation to CMU-Q. In this event, students learn about blood types as a tool in criminology and transfusion medicine. Students carried out visualization and interpretation of agglutination, microscopy and helped determine blood types and disorders of patient. As part of my service to the Biological Sciences Program, I was involved with supervising students at this event, as well as providing feedback on the delivery of the content and suggesting feedback for improvement to the subsequent event in Jan 2020.

    Discovery and Characterization of Novel Anti-Malarial and Anti- Cancer Drugs. My involvement with this NPRP is as follows: “Prof Faulkner is a synthetic organic chemist who will use his expertise to narrow the selection of compounds for more detailed biophysical studies. He will also assist in the selection of fragment hits such that it will be feasible to link the fragments together and if time permits he will begin to assemble fragments into potential lead compounds.” This is taken directly from the grant application.

    Working with Nour Nasrallah in collating careers guidance specifically for Biological Sciences students. We have created careers videos which have been released on or social media platforms. In addition, this year Nour created a number of videos for the Biosciences department which were used in the Marhaba Tartans events

    Biological Sciences Faculty Search Committee

    The search committee has involved a considerable time-effort. We attended training sessions in bias, created rubrics to assess incoming applications, held Zoom interverviews for two-rounds – a short interview format and a long interview format (with demo lecture). We have had numerous discussions concerning the evaluation of candidates and have made iterative chalnges to our search.

    As part of our annual retreat, the Biosciences faculty is working on a strategic action plan for the near and distance future. My part in this was to produce a plan of how both the faculty and staff can become peer observation partners with the objective of sharing best practices with each other and to develop a sense of community.

    Biosciences Excellence in Academic Research Award (BEAR)

    I was tasked with generating an award ceremony which recognises a senior student in Biosciences for their contribution and dedication to UG research. I liaised with Nesrine Affara and Mohamed Bouaouina in creating the nomination and selection process. In addition, I chairs the same committee where faculty and staff were invited to participate in organising the event for the biosciences social at the end of this academic year.
